St John’s College

We are always excited to have international students add to the rich and diverse cultures in our school. Founded in 1941 and with a current role of just under 400 young men, our aim is to provide a high-quality education, grounded in Gospel values within our Catholic and Marist traditions.

Our international students have not always been Catholic but have accepted our Values in their path to man-hood.

St. John’s College has a strong focus on excellence in academia, sport and the Arts, supported by a totally dedicated and highly-qualified teaching and administrative staff where international students will feel at home, learn, thrive and grow.

We love hosting short and long-term students to experience not only a world-class New Zealand education but also our world-renowned, beautiful Hawke’s Bay.
We have excellent home-stays that will welcome your son into their homes and families, who enjoy hosting overseas students in a safe environment. They allow our international students truly to embrace the ‘Kiwi’ lifestyle.

St. John’s College is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education.

Homestay Accommodation

Te Whakaruruhau kāinga rua – (“Tear Facka-roo-roo-hoe ca-inga roo-a”)

Whether staying for a week to experience our stunning Hawke’s Bay or to live and study for a full year, St. John’s College can arrange a homestay family for our international guests. Living with a New Zealand family helps to increase their circle of friends as well as improve their English skills.

We have excellent homestays that are carefully selected and will welcome your son into their homes and families. They enjoy hosting overseas students and provide a safe environment allowing our international students to embrace the ‘Kiwi’ lifestyle. Many families have adorable pets though we have homestays without should your son have an allergy. All students will have their own fully-furnished bedroom and share the rest of the house. Nearly all houses in Hawke’s Bay are detached with a garden. Parks, shopping, a cinema complex, etc. are usually not far away.

As part of being a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students and whether staying with a host family or family members, the school abides by the strict rules within the Code, which include police vetting, bi-annual home visits and surveys.
